A Homegrown Art Series Reimagines Plants As Surreal Organic Sculptures

Disha Bijolia

Priyanka Shah is a visual artist who works between the realms of Art and Design. Born and raised in Mumbai, she studied Visual Communication at London College of Communication. She wanted to play in a more tactile medium so after having practised graphic design for 7 years, she switched to materials and texture for her artistic expression.

Priyanka now runs a little multi-disciplinary practice called Studio Lalala, that often uses organic elements as a medium to communicate brand stories through photoshoots, visual merchandising and spatial design. She particularly enjoys storytelling through concept-driven images and installations. Priyanka combines her aesthetics and design principles with an understanding of shape, material and form and how they work together.

Priyanka is a Contributing Editor with Architectural Digest India and she has also collaborated with brands like Vogue, Obataimu, Le Mill and Ekaya for creative direction and styling.

But her biggest project as a visual artist has to be Fantasy Botanicals, an evolving series of sculptures where she designs her own plant sculptures by taking familiar organic elements out of their original context and unearthing a new meaning; slowly building a world of her own fantasy. It is about questioning the existing and uncovering her own natural aesthetic sensibilities.

The series started as a part of The 100 days project which is a global art project that takes place online. It's more of a resolution where artists across mediums, choose a creative project, do it every single day for 100 days, and share their process on their social accounts using the hashtag #The100DayProject. Priyanka took the project as an opportunity to explore her love for nature through her organic sculptures.

Priyanka's Studio Lalala offers visual storytelling through image building like brand photoshoots, visual merchandising, event designing, et cetera. She shares her creative process and ethos in an interview with Platform, "Depending on the brief given, we first gather basic ideas and elements. As humans, we're conditioned to make sense of objects instantly. Through deconstruction and juxtaposition of these elements, we strip them off their learned meanings and play with the deep conditionings of our minds. Nowadays, many disciplines of design tend to overlap with each other, and my working style looks to build off such intermingling of mediums."

Priyanka is truly a one-of-a-kind artist that has expanded the boundaries of visual art and has elevated the medium by adding to it a sense of touch in the perception of design artworks. Her ongoing series does justice to its name in with the otherworldly lifeforms that seem like they do come from a distant fantasy land.
