Pen To Paper: Here's Why More & More Indians Are Embracing Journaling

Sobhika Vasanthan

The evolution and growing popularity of journaling present a fascinating narrative. Across history, the act of chronicling thoughts and emotions through journaling or diaries has been a longstanding practice. However, the contemporary surge in journaling among our generation signifies a shift beyond mere documentation.

In eras preceding social media's dominance, avenues like Instagram or blogs didn’t exist for sharing pictures or expressing thoughts. Writing stood as the primary means of articulating feelings, and opinions, and preserving a tangible record for others to peruse. In today's digital realm, the necessity to jot down thoughts and emotions on paper seems less essential. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook serve as immediate outlets for self-expression and lifestyle display. Moreover, there is a significant factor of external validation and approval that you receive for hashing out thoughts and feelings.

However, amidst this digital landscape, a profound self-awareness has emerged among our generation, fostering a collective acknowledgement of mental health's significance. Consequently, there's a concurrent surge in both journaling and the pursuit of therapy. Writing down personal thoughts and feelings has transformed into a cathartic practice, actively contributing to emotional well-being.

The benefits of journaling extend far beyond mere documentation. It has been recognised as a potent tool to manage anxiety, reduce stress, and cope with depression. By enabling individuals to prioritise concerns, track daily symptoms, and engage in positive self-reflection, journaling aids in symptom management and mood enhancement.

Developing a consistent journaling habit involves dedicating a few minutes daily to writing. Accessibility plays a crucial role, hence keeping a journal handy—whether it’s a physical notebook or a digital one on a smartphone—facilitates regular entries. There's no rigid structure to adhere to; journaling is a private activity for expressing thoughts and emotions freely. The emphasis lies in allowing thoughts to flow uninhibited, dismissing concerns about spelling errors or external judgment.

Many, myself included, face challenges in maintaining consistency. We often encounter hurdles in the pursuit of regular journaling. Some days, it's easy to disengage and lose touch with inner thoughts, disrupting the flow of expression. However, with the aid of appropriate tools and methods, these inconsistencies can be effectively addressed.

One such avenue is the creative journaling Workshop conducted in an ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) format, led by Fazila Fahzath, the creative mind behind the Journal Owl. This workshop offers a unique approach to art journaling, a space where individuals can visually articulate their ideas, stories, and emotions through a diverse range of artistic mediums. It's a therapeutic process, allowing participants to comprehend their emotions and translate them onto paper or any chosen artistic medium.

Art journaling embraces inclusivity, welcoming individuals of all ages and backgrounds without any prerequisites or prior experience. Hosted once a month with varying themes and journal prompts, seats for the workshop are limited, necessitating a registration fee to secure a spot. Upon registration, participants receive a confirmation message, ensuring their place in the session. The beauty of art journaling lies in its lack of rigid rules, providing complete creative freedom. There are no limitations to what one can include; it's an open canvas that does not judge. Each individual's art journal is a unique reflection of personal expression, allowing for customisation and personalisation based on individual preferences and interests.

Paper journaling is encouraged, offering writers a sense of autonomy and control that digital platforms might not provide. The physical act of writing on paper holds a unique power—an inherent recognition by the brain that engages mental simulation, rendering a deeper impact on one's psyche. This recognition is why many individuals selectively choose their journals, understanding the significance of this intimate connection between pen and paper.

Among the myriad options available, some journal brands stand out, each offering a distinctive appeal and purpose. The Origin One, their collection embodies everyday stationery essentials, encompassing planners, diaries, journals, and a variety of social stationery. From meticulously thread-stitched notebooks to wire-bound options, Origin One curates a wide array of products. Notably, they introduced India’s pioneering stationery subscription service, catering to the evolving needs of stationery enthusiasts.

Paperdom Dotted Journal goes beyond its conventional identity as merely a journal—it doubles as a sketchbook, diary, or even a canvas for scribbling thoughts. With over 216 mildly dotted pages, this tree-free journal accommodates various artistic mediums, capturing dreams and doodles alike with enthusiasm. Noteworthy is their weekly wellness notepad, designed to aid in holistic health improvement. From tracking meals and exercise to monitoring mood and sleep patterns, this tool emphasises the importance of self-care and habit-tracking for mental well-being.

Odd Giraffe takes a guided approach to wellness journaling, focusing on self-care through their specialised Wellness Journals. These journals incorporate unique daily prompts aimed at fostering reflection and stress management. They cater to diverse preferences and needs, offering individuals the tools to weave their stories, express their emotions, and prioritise their mental well-being through the tangible act of journaling.
